The MOXXI System

The Medical Office for the Twenty First Century (MOXXI) is a clinical tool and research project testing the potential benefits of an electronic prescription and drug management system for primary care physicians. MOXXI was developed to enhance patient safety by integrating patient demographics, retrieving active drugs from pharmacy systems, generating an automated problem list, and providing electronic prescription, stop order, automated prescribing, problem alerts, compliance monitoring functions, and disease management support. This system includes a dynamic electronic prescription system with fields for treatment indications; a drug profiler with a graphic representation of the list of prescription medications purchased in the last year; a refill compliance calculator; dates of emergency room visits and hospital admissions; cost of drugs dispensed; an alert system that detects interactions among drugs, treatment duplications, and contraindications with certain allergies or specific diseases; and specialized decision-support tools for disease management. The MOXXI system is constantly evolving to include new innovative clinical support tools.

MOXXI is a unique and innovative system that improves health care service delivery and patient outcome. The project has demonstrated, and continues to demonstrate, the benefits of implementing an electronic prescribing and drug and disease management system for primary care physicians, pharmacists and their patients. The MOXXI research project is a solution for safe and effective drug management.

The MOXXI system is unique in being the only system linked to the Régie de l'Assurance Maladie du Québec (RAMQ), the provincial database of dispensed prescriptions and medical services. Through the link to the RAMQ, physicians are able to identify all dispensed drugs and all medical services provided to their patients which are presented to them graphically through an integrated drug profile and problem list. This feature provides primary care physicians with a better control and understanding of their patients drug intake and health problems. MOXXI is also the only system that attributes a treatment indication for all prescriptions, allowing for the integration of automated complex decision-support and disease management tools based on a more accurate and complete patient profile.

Another innovative aspect of MOXXI is the integration of specialized decision support tools that provide healthcare specialists with unique software services designed and clinically demonstrated to improve patient care and outcomes. These original clinical support tools use logical rules and statistical models to encode biomedical knowledge that prompts clinicians to take actions that will support the effective and safe prevention and management of disease. The software services use the patient’s unique clinical profile to provide patient-specific clinical support and help physicians select the best treatment option for each individual. Within the context of the MOXXI project, new decision-support tools are continuously being developed and empirically tested.
